All schools in Chatham County are engaged in KEA and are implementing the following Kindergarten Entry Constructs:
  • Engagement in Self-Selected Activities
  • Object Counting
  • Emotional Literacy
  • Grip & Manipulation
  • Crossing Midline
  • Following Directions
  • Letter Naming

Teachers in the partner schools only in kindergarten through grade three are utilizing additional construct progressions as tools to support the formative assessment process.
Kindergarten teachers at partner schools are utilizing the following construct:

Grades 1 through 3 in partner schools are utilizing the following constructs:

Resources to Support Usability Study Schools

The following videos resources were created and posted for teachers in the Chatham County School District in partner schools to support teachers in the formative assessment process related specifically to the construct progressions for Emotional and Social Development. The short embedded videos below are excerpts from a more lengthy expert interview with Dr. Steve Knotek, Associate Professor of School Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, regarding critical issues in emotional and social development. Dr. Knotek is interviewed by UNC Chapel Hill School Psychology doctoral students Melissa McWilliams and Dorina Mohite regarding the importance of emotional and social development and shares specifics associated with Emotion Regulation and Emotional Literacy and the role of teachers in supporting children's development of both Emotional Literacy and Emotion Regulation.

What is Emotional and Social Development?



Emotions serve a very important function in development. They help motivate us to take action, avoid danger, and establish and sustain social relationships (Landy, 2002). In this first short video Dr. Knotek defines the construct of emotional and social development and provides a strong rationale for why parents, caregivers, and teachers should value this area of development, particularly as it relates to the success of children in school and life.

What is Emotional Literacy?


Emotional Literacy is fundamental to emotional and social development. In this brief video Dr. Knotek defines Emotional Literacy to support teachers in understanding how students can develop strategies in Emotional Regulation.

What is Emotion Regulation?




Emotion regulation, or the ability to control one’s own emotions, is related to children’s success in school (Denham, 2006; Howse, Calkins, Anastopoulos, Keane & Shelton, 2003; Zins, Bloodworth, Weissberg & Walberg, 2007). In this video Dr. Knotek explains how children improve their school and life outcomes by learning to reflect on their emotions and manage them more effectively.

What can teachers do to support students' Emotional and Social Development?



Children need support when learning to regulate emotions and are able to employ suggested strategies over time. In this slightly longer video segment Dr. Knotek builds upon the rationale of the value of emotional and social development for school and life success to empower teachers and school professionals with resources. He provides a broad understanding of how to support emotional regulation along with specific, practical strategies that teachers can use in their daily teaching routine.
