TECHNOLOGY Q&A

Q: What do I do when I have technology issues? Where do I go for support?

A: Email: northcarolina@teachingstrategies.com Or phone: 1-884-852-4653 (Hours: Monday through Thursday 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM ET, Friday 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM ET)

Q: How do I get access to the online platform? How do I log on?

A. Teachers and administrators with existing NC K-3 FAP accounts may continue using their usernames and passwords.
Username: Your username is your current Unique Statewide Identifier (UID). Please see your LEA data manager/administrator if you do not know your UID.
Password: Set your password by clicking the “Forgot Password” option. You will then be sent an email from Implementation@TeachingStrategies.com with a temporary password and instructions to create your permanent password. The temporary password is valid for 12 hours.
All kindergarten teachers and their principals have access to the NC K-3 Formative Assessment Process Online Platform. All other users (e.g., coaches, co-teachers, assistant principals, support staff, etc) can be added to the platform by the District Administrator using your UID as your username.

For additional login options, see our updated step-by-step Login Directions document.

Q: What about new kindergarten teachers or principals? How do they get access?

A: They are added automatically when updated in PowerSchool. Updates to the information in the NC K-3 Formative Assessment Online Platform from PowerSchool will occur on a regular basis, so soon after new teacher or principal information is entered into PowerSchool, it will be transferred and access will be granted. Then, teacher and principals follow the same procedure as first time users (above) to gain access by using their UID and the "forgot password" feature.

Q: Am I on the right website?

A: When you are logging in to the NC K-3 Formative Assessment Online Platform, please be absolutely sure you are on https://nc.teachingstrategies.com/. We have found that sometimes initial users of the pilot and initial district teams and/or teachers who have used Teaching Strategies GOLD may have a different URL saved in their bookmarks or their browser. Here are some strategies that will help you make sure you're in the right place every time:
  • Logout completely every time you use the online platform. This allows you to enter your login information fresh each time you want to use the online application, and you can make sure you're on the right site.
  • Clear all cookies from your browser. WikiHow provides information on how to do this in several different browsers and on different devices: http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser's-Cookies. Go here to learn how to clear cookies in Firefox.
  • Use a unique browser every time you wish you login to the online application. For example, if you typically use Explorer, switch to Firefox only for online platform use.

Q: What if we share students? Can we both add evidence if we co-teach and/or share data across the grade level?

A: Yes. Teachers can be added as co-teachers to classes. So, partner teachers and PLC groups can have access to each other's classes. Your principal can do this or your district level administrator can.

Q: Does information transfer from school to school and district to district?

A: Yes. This will happen automatically when PowerSchool is updated at each school/district. PowerSchool teacher, student, and class data exports are loaded into the NC K-3 Formative Assessment Online Platform nightly. Therefore, updates and changes made in PowerSchool will appear in the platform the next day. Student data, including evidence as well as demographics and historical information remain with the student when they transfer from school to school, or district to district.

Q: What about those students who cannot be videotaped or photographed?

A: Some families have concerns regarding the use and storage of photographs and videos of their child(ren). These concerns stem from concerns about data security in a world where security breaches have become far too common. While we have confirmed that Teaching Strategies has never had a security breach and have communicated that information to families who have expressed concern. We recognize that parents may still choose not to have photographs and videos of their child collected and stored on the online application. Parents certainly have this choice.
Districts already implement a process using some sort of Media Use and Release Permission Form by which parents indicate their preference regarding having their child's photograph taken and used for any media purposes. Districts do not need to create a separate form or process for the K-3 Formative Assessment Process. Rather, they can use their existing process to capture parent preferences on this matter. However, it may be helpful for teachers to distinguish between photographs used for public purposes (e.g., school or class website) and those used for educational purposes and stored in a manner that complies with FERPA (eg., NC K-3 Formative Assessment Online Platform). In either instance, parents may choose not to have photos/videos taken and stored if they wish.

Q: How does mCLASS data and evidence integrate within the K-3 Formative Assessment Process we are implementing?

A: See the collaborative PPT for how your mCLASS data and the K-3 Formative Assessment Process aligns:
http://rtt-elc-k3assessment.ncdpi.wikispaces.net/Working+Together

Q: Is there an App and how do I find it? Is it free?

A: Yes. The App is optional and is available in the Apple Store and in the Google Play Store (it is FREE). You can find it by searching for "NC K-3 Evidence". Then, you can use it by signing in with your username and password. For more information, click here: Mobile App Best Practices.

Q: Do PowerSchool and the App talk? (Can we upload kids in our district?)

A: Yes. When you log into the App, you will see your students and can add evidences. See the NEW Data and Account Access Guide for more information.
